I’m not trying to sit here and pretty sure same with Mogahed, and say that forming attachments are wrong and that we should be completely detached from this world and people. We then forget, who is the true owner of our heart and it is He, Allah. The mind and the heart that was created by Allah, for Allah, becomes the property of someone or something else.” Subhan’Allah (exalted is He), when you think from this sense, we place our heart in to another persons hands, in to our materialistic possession. In this sense, Mogahed says “every waking moment is spent in contemplation of them, in submission and worship to them. Same thing goes with the materialistic possessions that we have. Take for instance, when you are with the one you love – the only people that exist in the world is you and that person. Similarly, when we become attached to something and someone so much, we tend to forget about everything and everyone. When you’re in trouble don’t depend on yourself. When you’re an activist, don’t put your hope in the results. When you get married, don’t expect your spouse to fulfil your every need. But what does it mean to place your hope in dunya? How can this be avoided? It means when you have friends, don’t expect your friends to fill your emptiness. Mogahed gives her insight on attachments and expresses that, “my hope was in dunya. Similarly, these attachments are not just with people, it is also with objects and specifically materialistic things. Whatever level of attachments we have, but the main thing is that we all have them. Some we feel detached from, but there is some bond that still holds you together. Some we become very attached with and cannot see anything else but them. There are many different forms of attachments that we form with people. She presents verses from the Qur’aan and authentic hadith which really take your breath away and not only that, you connect with the writer because she gives personal experience. The writer has such a brilliant way of intertwining what we feel in this dunya (world) and how we should channel our needs and desires towards Allah (SWT). From attachments, to love and even to the role of women in Islam. Mogahed covers some very important topics, which we as humans feel and think about every day of our lives. Reclaiming your heart and breaking free from life shackles is something that we all should strive to do and think about. This book does exactly what it says on the front cover “Reclaim Your Heart” or at least, attempt to make you think very deeply. Yasmin Mogahed is an inspirational speaker, writer and to me, a very knowledgeable person. Alternatively, you can read the whole thing :-).
